This story was difficult to read through without crying. I’ve lost two of my own dogs in the past 10 years, and I miss both of them greatly – perhaps I will write about it one day soon. But for now, I wanted to bring you the story of Meeka and a Reddit user that used the social platform to say goodbye to her 16 year old friend.
Meeka was 16 years old when she had to be put down – she was in pain, and so her owner and lifelong friend felt that it was the best thing she could do for her. One thing that Meeka had always wanted was ice cream, and on her last day here with us on earth, her owner gave her some to enjoy:
Meeka had 16 happy years with her best friend.
Every time her owner would get ice cream, Meeka would want some.
She wasn’t allowed to have it!
On her last day on earth, Meeka’s owner, with tears in her eyes, gave her ice cream.
She clearly really enjoyed it. What a good friend.
Good bye Meeka. We love you.
There was an outpouring of empathy and well wishes. Truly, the Reddit community grieved for Meeka as well. This is what Meeka’s owner responded to all of the love with:
“Thank you all for the wonderful comments, stories, and comfort you’ve provided. They’ve made me cry, laugh, smile, and wince. I’m so glad I was able to share her last night with all of you, and hopefully that helped you in some way. I also wanted to apologize for making so many of you cry! We often confuse endings with sadness. But, it does not mean it should be a sad/sob story. This is the tale of a happy story – a 16 year old beautiful dog that gave me so many wonderful memories. Now she is able to have a happy end to her life filled with ice cream, instead of discomfort and pain.
My dog’s name is Meeka and she is a husky/german-shepherd mix. She truly is an amazing dog…she use to be able to bark “I love you” and she could escape out of anything you could imagine (even a metal cage)! I feel so blessed to have spent 16 long years with her, but unfortunately it is now her time to run away to paradise. Meeka has forever left a paw print on my heart, and I will always love her.”
I’m so glad that Meeka’s owner shared her dog’s last day on earth. It may have brought me to tears, but they were tears of joy remembering all of the good times with my past dogs.
